Week 6 — Passion for Souls

March–April Discipleship | The Mission of the Church

Theme: A church moved by compassion and spiritual urgency

Key Text: Matthew 9:36–38

Mission is not sustained only by organization, but by compassion. Jesus saw the crowds and was deeply moved because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. That same perspective of Christ must also become the perspective of the church.

Many times we become accustomed to living around spiritual need without allowing our hearts to be stirred. We see broken families, confused young people, wounded marriages, and empty lives, yet continue on our way without stopping. But when the Holy Spirit touches the heart of a church, a genuine burden for souls is born.

Passion for souls is not emotional fanaticism; it is spiritual sensitivity. It is understanding that every person has eternal value before God. It is recognizing that behind every face there is a story, a struggle, a need, and an opportunity for the grace of Christ to be revealed.

Jesus said that the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. That means the field is ready, but believers are needed who will pray, serve, proclaim, and get involved. Mission does not move forward simply because need exists; it advances when the church responds to the call with practical compassion and spiritual perseverance.

A church passionate for souls does not remain shut within itself. It prays for the lost, seeks them out, receives them with love, walks with them, and guides them into a right relationship with God. That passion must be part of our identity as the people of the Lord.

Application

Let us ask the Lord to break our hearts again. May we never grow used to seeing need without responding. This week we can pray for specific names, visit someone, invite a person to church, or share our testimony simply and sincerely. Passion for souls is shown in concrete steps.

For Reflection

Is my heart moved by those who do not yet know Christ?
Have I lost spiritual sensitivity toward the need of souls?
Am I willing to become a worker in the Lord’s harvest?

Invitation

If today you feel like a weary, wounded, or directionless sheep, Christ is still the Good Shepherd. He knows your need and wants to give you rest, forgiveness, and a new life. Today you can come to Him with confidence.

“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them…”
Matthew 9:36

Closing Prayer

Lord, give us Your compassion for souls. Remove indifference from our hearts and awaken in us a true burden for the lost. Make us faithful workers in Your harvest and use us to bring many to the knowledge of Christ. Amen.
